Do you have a nickname? Jace

When and why did you first become interested in gymnastics? When I was 1-2 years old I had a lot of energy. I would climb shelves and try to hang from the lights above kitchen tables. At 2 I went to my brother’s birthday party at a local gym and loved it.

When did you decide you wanted to compete? And, when did you want to compete at a high level? What about competition appeals to you? I started competing when I was 6 years old in level 4. I loved it and have not stopped since. I love getting to show off what I’ve been able to accomplish with all my hard work, and I love the feeling of hitting a good routine.

What is your training regimen? Was that a big change when you made the switch to competitive gymnastics? I train 6 days/week at Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center (JPAC). We train every evening from 4-8 and Saturdays from 8:30-12:30. I had a big adjustment when, at 7, I switched to JPAC because I had to train more hours and Gymnastics became a lot more serious to me.

What is your favorite event? Floor

What is your favorite skill? Side aerial on beam

What music do you use for your floor routine? Roundtable Rival

Who is your favorite gymnast or who is your “idol”? Aly Raisman because she is a strong gymnast and because she inspires so many

How have you grown as a gymnast during your career, both skill wise and mentally? I have grown a lot more confident in myself and trust my training.

How has gymnastics helped you as a person? Gymnastics has taught me wonderful life lessons like time management, the importance of hard work, dedication, and laser beam focus.

If you had to select one life-lesson that gymnastics has taught you, what would it be? Preparation is the key to confidence.

What are your biggest accomplishments or best memories in your career? Becoming a two-time qualifier to the Nastia Liukin Cup

What grade are you in school? I am a freshman

Do you want to compete in collegiate gymnastics? Yes! I love the enthusiasm and team spirit at collegiate meets!

What are your favorite subjects, etc.? Math and photography are currently my favorite classes. I really like learning about new things and seeing friends at school everyday.

If you plan to go to college, do you know what you want to study there? Something in the medical field

What are your goals for the future, both as an athlete and after you are finished competing? I hope to compete JO Nationals, compete gymnastics in college, and live a healthy and happy life.

When you’re not in the gym, how do you enjoy spending your time? Do you have any hobbies or favorite activities? Charities? I like to be outside, photography, going to sporting events, cooking/baking, exploring, hanging with friends and family, and going to concerts.

What is your favorite food? Ice cream

What is your favorite movie? The Greatest Showman

What is your favorite book? Divergent series

What is your favorite music group? Country artists

Are any of your family members current or former athletes? Which sports? My dad played football and ran track in college while my brother Jon is a junior who is a quarterback and pitches on the school’s varsity teams.

Do you have any competition rituals? Lucky charms? I have to use the same hair ties

What’s on your IPod right now? What type of music do enjoy listening to? How about before a meet when you’re trying to get focused and pumped up? I love country music and I listen to whatever is on the radio

If you had to pick 3 words to describe yourself as a gymnast, what are they? Joyful, tough, dedicated
